THE ARCHITECTURE
Inside, the spine forms an atrium, which is the building’s main public space. The spine supports a suspended amphitheatre over the west entrance and a boardroom over the east entrance. A series of hanging pods are suspended from the spine’s trusses. Just inside the west entrance is a gallery, which honours the legacy of the Nickle Arts Museum.
THE FORUM
Join us in the forum and learn more about the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning. The room has retractable seating that allows it to convert from a flat-floor learning space of 130 to a 340-seat public theatre lecture space.
THE TECHNOLOGY
Learning spaces offer touchscreen monitors complete with web cameras and speakers providing greater possibilities for interactivity.

University of Calgary | School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape | City Building Design Lab

For over half a century, the WR Castell Building has been the busy hub of numerous activities in the areas of research, education, informal learning and leisure. As a pilot outpost for University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, the new City Building Design Lab extends the building’s legacy as a public meeting space by creating a place of learning about city building, and a cultural outlet for events and programming for Calgarians and visitors interested in architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture.
The CBDLab is part of Doors Open YYC this year. Visitors will have a chance to learn from researchers about the architectural history of the building, and tour some of the spaces of the school not usually open to the public, such as the digital fabrication workshop, event hall and the design studio.

Haultain School
Tucked away in Calgary’s Beltline neighbourhood is the historic Haultain School. Built in 1894 when Alberta was not yet a province, it was home to a two-room school house. Its first students included children of railway workers, new immigrants and some of Calgary’s wealthier citizens. Learn about the unique architecture and history of this historic gem, Calgary’s oldest surviving and very first sandstone school. Hear about how the school changed over the years and about its current tenants, two non-profit organizations, Parks Foundation Calgary and Calgary Heritage Authority. Glenmore Water Treatment Plant
Come learn about the pumps, pipes and people that ensure the availability of high quality drinking water 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In this rare glimpse inside the historic Glenmore Water Treatment Plant, City of Calgary, Water Services staff will highlight how some of the cleanest river water in the world is treated to become safe drinking water. This experience will showcase why we should all value Calgary’s most precious resource and will explore ways you can help to protect and preserve our rivers through actions in your own home.

For all those who are 10 and over, participate in a 1.5 hour tour that highlights what happens as water from the Elbow River/Glenmore Reservoir is brought into our plant and treated to the highest standards.

Protecting Your Public Art Collection Tour:
The City’s art collection includes over 1200 pieces of temporary and permanently sited outdoor installations in parks and plazas, as well as artworks integrated into infrastructure such as roadways, buildings, bridges and LRT stations.
The collection also includes portable artworks such as photographs, paintings, ceramics, textiles, and sculptures which are rotated throughout public spaces.
Artworks in the collection are in the public arena frequently but this important cultural legacy requires safe storage when not on display, as well as regular maintenance and professional conservation practices.

Meet the mannequins, practice your CPR skills, what to do in an emergency situation!
We will be running mock codes that will allow visitors to jump in and help resuscitate ‘patients’ (the use of high-fidelity mannequins), we will have a CPR station set-up that provides real-time feedback and visitors will be able to see their results or compete against each other, and guided tours with descriptions of the work we do here.
